Digicel and Vodafone both sell SIM cards, including at Port Vila airport. 4G coverage varies across the islands, so check the regulator's coverage map, which you can filter by operator and by island, before heading to Tanna, Santo or the outer islands.

Ambae, Ambrym, Epi, Gaua, Lopevi, Tanna and Vanua Lava all have active volcanoes, and an alert level can rise suddenly enough to close an island. The Geo-Hazards Department's volcano page lists each one's current level, including Yasur on Tanna.

Outer islands are often reached on small local planes, many domestic airports have basic facilities, and weather or volcanic ash can change or suspend schedules at short notice. Inter-island boats are infrequent and many lack current seaworthiness certificates, the UK warns, so build spare days into a multi-island trip.
