Four networks, big gaps
The regulator's mobile market reports cover four networks: Vodacom, Airtel and Orange each hold a large share of subscribers, Africell a much smaller one. Coverage can be intermittent, and Canada advises against relying on your phone in an emergency, especially outside major cities.

The DRC is a cash-based economy. Canada's travel advice notes that credit cards are generally not accepted except in certain hotels, restaurants and department stores, so plan to pay for most things in cash.

No single emergency number
There is no central number for emergency services. In Kinshasa only, UK advice lists 112 for police and 118 for fire, and there is no general ambulance line, so save the numbers of your hotel, a nearby hospital and your embassy before you need them.
