
We just launched unlimited eSIMs, and with them a phrase that deserves a closer look: reduced speed. After each day's high-speed allowance, an unlimited plan keeps you connected at a slower rate, and plan pages describe that rate with numbers like 512 kbps or 1 Mbps. Those numbers decide whether "slower" means "perfectly fine for maps and chat" or "staring at a spinner". This guide translates them into real life: what kbps and Mbps actually measure, and what messaging, navigation, music and video genuinely need.
A bit is the smallest unit of digital information, and speeds count how many bits your connection moves per second: kbps is thousands of bits per second (kilobits), Mbps is millions (megabits). So 1 Mbps equals 1,000 kbps, and the range in this article's title spans a roughly 40x difference. 128 kbps and 5 Mbps are not neighbouring tiers; they are different worlds.
The classic trap is bits versus bytes. Files are measured in bytes (a 5 MB photo, a 40 MB app update), and one byte is 8 bits. Speeds are measured in bits. That is why a 5 MB photo on a 1 Mbps connection takes about 40 seconds, not 5: the photo is 40 megabits. The shortcut worth memorising: divide a speed in Mbps by 8 to get MB per second.
Abstract units become concrete the moment you attach a stopwatch. Here is how long two everyday downloads take at each tier, assuming the connection holds its full rate:

Notice the shape of that table: every doubling of speed halves the wait. The painful gap is not between 2 and 5 Mbps, where everything merely gets snappier. It is between 128 and 512 kbps, where a photo goes from "grab a coffee" to "count to eighty".


Speed tiers are not trivia; they are the fine print that decides how an "unlimited" plan actually feels. A plan that drops to 1 Mbps still streams music and plays SD video; a plan that drops to 128 kbps is a lifeline for maps and chat. Both are honestly called "unlimited".
That is why our plan pages state the reduced speed instead of hiding it. When you compare plans, treat the throttle number as part of the price: a slightly cheaper plan that falls back to a crawl can cost you more in hotel-lobby frustration than it saves at checkout.
If an unlimited plan will not tell you its reduced speed, assume the worst tier and decide whether you could live with it. The after-allowance number is the plan.
One honest caveat: any speed on a label is the maximum the network will give you, not a guarantee at every moment. For texts and voice notes, yes. Voice calls work but can sound choppy, photos take minutes to send, and video calls will not hold. Think of 128 kbps as staying reachable, not fully connected.
Yes. Standard streaming quality uses roughly 96–160 kbps, so 512 kbps leaves comfortable headroom. High-fidelity tiers and instant track downloads are where it starts to strain.
A one-to-one call at modest quality works from about 0.5–1 Mbps. For steady HD or group calls, plan on 2–3 Mbps. Below that, switch the call to audio only and it will hold at a fraction of the bandwidth.
Roughly 1–1.5 Mbps for 480p, around 3 Mbps for 720p, and about 5 Mbps for 1080p. Players adapt automatically, so on a slower tier you get a lower resolution rather than nothing.
The tier is a cap, not a floor. Congestion, weak indoor signal and network conditions reduce what you actually get at any moment, on both full-speed and reduced-speed connections. Moving a few metres or reselecting the network often helps.
