Looking for an eSIM for Saudi Arabia? Zwitchy's Saudi plans connect on Mobily, with 5G where available, and install before you fly, so you skip the fingerprint check a local SIM needs. Budget 5 GB for a week, or go unlimited for Umrah video calls home. Don't count on WhatsApp calls; messages work.
Most trips to Saudi Arabia take one of two shapes: Umrah in Makkah and Madinah, often with a few days in Jeddah, or a tourist loop through Riyadh, Jeddah's old town and the sandstone valleys of AlUla. Both lean hard on your phone. Pilgrims book Umrah and Rawdah permits in the Nusuk app and video-call family between prayers; tourists live on maps, ride-hailing apps and phone payments. This guide covers how Mobily's network holds up, what happens to WhatsApp calls, why a local SIM means a fingerprint scan, what the eVisa allows, and how much data to buy.
Getting online in Saudi Arabia: your three options
In short: A travel eSIM installs at home and skips the passport-and-fingerprint step a Saudi SIM needs.
You can roam on your home plan, buy a Saudi SIM after you land, or install a travel eSIM before you go. Roaming is the easiest but usually the priciest. A local SIM is good value but comes with paperwork: every new line is registered to your passport and verified with your fingerprints, as the section below explains. A travel eSIM sits in between. You install it at home on Wi-Fi, it connects on Mobily when you land, and your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank texts. Weighing it up? See eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming.
Mobily coverage in Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla
In short: Mobily won Opensignal's reliability award; download offline maps before AlUla's desert drives.
Zwitchy's Saudi Arabia eSIM connects on Mobily, one of the country's three big mobile networks alongside stc and Zain, with 5G where available and 4G elsewhere. In Opensignal's February 2026 report, based on tests from October to December 2025, Mobily won the awards for reliability and consistent quality, while stc took the speed and coverage awards. There's nothing to pick by hand: turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM and your phone joins Mobily on its own.
AlUla is the place to plan ahead. The oasis town and the Nabataean tombs of Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage site, sit among wide sandstone valleys, and the drives between sites cross open desert. Download offline maps of AlUla before you head out and save your tour and hotel confirmations on the phone, so a quiet stretch of road never leaves you stuck.
Umrah and Hajj: staying connected in Makkah and Madinah
In short: The holy sites have full 4G and 5G, but open your Nusuk permit before the crowds.
Makkah and Madinah carry some of the heaviest mobile traffic anywhere, and the networks are built for it. Ahead of Hajj 2026, Saudi Arabia's communications regulator, CST, said more than 5,200 telecom towers served Makkah, Madinah and the holy sites, with 4G and 5G covering all of the holy sites. Mobily and Ericsson say Mobily more than doubled its 5G capacity in the Mashaer area for that season. Use was heavy too: over Hajj 2026 the average person in Makkah and the holy sites used about 1.4 GB of data a day, more than twice the global average, according to CST.
During Hajj 2026, the average person in Makkah and the holy sites used about 1.4 GB of data a day.
Even so, when a huge crowd gathers in one place at once, such as after a prayer around the Grand Mosque, expect speeds to slow for a while. A few habits help:
- Open your Nusuk permit before you set off, not at the gate. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah requires a permit booked through Nusuk for Umrah and for praying in Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah, and it shows in the app.
- Agree on a fixed meeting point with your group before entering the mosque, rather than relying on a call or shared location inside the crowd.
- Keep the day for messages and send videos and photo backups later over your hotel's Wi-Fi.
- Carry a power bank. Maps, Nusuk and the camera drain a battery quickly on a long day.
Heads-upCheck your visa before you book. The tourist eVisa covers Umrah but not Hajj, and the Interior Ministry says only a Hajj visa allows Hajj. The rules also tighten in the weeks around Hajj: in 2026, Umrah permits were paused and Makkah was closed to everyone without a Hajj visa from 18 April to 31 May. Check the dates for your year in the Nusuk app.
Do WhatsApp calls work in Saudi Arabia?
In short: WhatsApp messages work, but calls were left off the approved list; use FaceTime instead.
WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes work normally. Calls are the problem. Saudi Arabia lifted its ban on internet calling in September 2017 for apps that met its rules, and FaceTime, Skype and Telegram were on the approved list, but WhatsApp calls were left off it. They were still reported blocked in 2025, and we found no announcement lifting the block since. Plan on this:
| What you want to do | What to use |
|---|---|
| Message family and friends | WhatsApp messages and voice notes, which work normally |
| Call or video-call home | FaceTime or another approved app; test it on day one |
| Reach a hotel, driver or tour guide | WhatsApp messages; a phone call needs a phone number, and our plans are data-only |
Our WhatsApp calling guide compares Saudi Arabia with other countries that restrict internet calls. Continuing to Dubai? Our UAE guide covers the calling rules there, which differ again.
Local SIMs: passport and fingerprint registration
In short: Every Saudi line needs fingerprint verification, and stc visitor SIMs are activated in a branch.
Saudi SIMs are good value, but each one is tied to a person. Since January 2016 the regulator has required fingerprint verification for mobile lines, and stc lists prepaid, postpaid and data SIMs as covered. Visitors register with a passport, and stc's visitor SIM page says you must visit a branch on arrival to activate the number. One shortcut exists: since May 2025, Zain's digital brand Yaqoot lets visitors verify their SIM or eSIM through the Absher app instead of at a store.
A local SIM makes sense for a long stay or if you need a Saudi number. For a week or two, a travel eSIM skips the counter and the fingerprint scan, and your home number stays live for bank codes.
eVisa and arrival airports
In short: The tourist eVisa covers Umrah outside Hajj season; Jeddah is the usual gateway to Makkah.
Citizens of dozens of countries can apply online for Saudi Arabia's tourist eVisa, a one-year, multiple-entry visa that allows up to 90 days in the country. It covers tourism, family visits, events and Umrah outside Hajj season, but not Hajj. The main ways in:
- Riyadh: King Khalid International (RUH), for the capital and Diriyah.
- Jeddah: King Abdulaziz International (JED), the usual gateway for Makkah, with a station on the Haramain High Speed Railway to Makkah and Madinah.
- Madinah: Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International (MED).
- AlUla: AlUla International (ULH), the closest airport to Hegra and the desert sites.
- Dammam: King Fahd International (DMM), for the Eastern Province.
How much data you'll need
In short: Long distances and daily video calls push Saudi trips above the usual data budget.
Saudi trips tend to use more data than most. Distances are long, so you lean on maps and ride-hailing apps, and pilgrims video-call family from Makkah and Madinah, which is how CST's Hajj average reached 1.4 GB a day. A rough guide for one week:
| Trip style | Data for one week |
|---|---|
| Light: maps, messaging, hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings | 2 to 3 GB |
| Typical: plus photos, social media and ride-hailing | 4 to 6 GB |
| Umrah with daily video calls home | 10 GB or unlimited |
| Heavy: streaming or a laptop on hotspot | 10 GB or more |
Your phone is also your wallet. Electronic payments made up 85% of retail payments by individuals in 2025, according to the central bank, and mada cards work with Apple Pay. Tapping to pay uses almost no data, but a banking app that won't load can leave you stuck at a checkout, so don't run your plan down to zero.
Which Saudi Arabia plan to buy
In short: Take 5 GB for a tourist week and unlimited for Umrah with daily video calls.
Every Saudi Arabia plan runs for 30 days and comes in 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 or 50 GB. There are also unlimited plans for 3 to 30 days, with 1 GB a day at full speed and a slower connection after that until the next day. All of them are data-only. Match the table above to your trip:
- A long weekend in Riyadh or Jeddah: the 3 GB plan covers maps, rides and messaging.
- A week touring Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla: the 5 GB plan.
- Umrah with daily video calls, or two weeks of travel: the 10 GB plan, or unlimited for the days you're there.
- A month-long stay, a laptop on hotspot or lots of streaming: the 20 GB plan or bigger.
Want one pick? Take 5 GB for a tourist week and unlimited for Umrah. If you run low, a top-up takes seconds.
Before you fly and when you land
In short: Install at home on Wi-Fi, check Nusuk permits, and save the 911 and 997 emergency numbers.
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Installing doesn't start the plan.
- After landing, set the eSIM as your data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, with its data roaming off.
- Pilgrims: sign in to Nusuk and check your permits while you still have Wi-Fi at home.
- Save the emergency numbers: 911 in Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh and the Eastern Province; elsewhere, 999 for police, 997 for an ambulance and 998 for civil defense.
Questions travelers ask
Which network does Zwitchy's Saudi Arabia eSIM use?
Mobily, one of Saudi Arabia's three big networks alongside stc and Zain, with 5G where available and 4G elsewhere. Opensignal's February 2026 report gave Mobily its reliability and consistent quality awards. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM and your phone connects by itself.
Do WhatsApp calls work in Saudi Arabia?
Don't count on them. WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes work, but WhatsApp calls were left off the list of approved calling apps in 2017 and were still reported blocked in 2025. FaceTime was approved, so use it or another approved app for calls home and test it on your first day.
How much data do I need for Umrah?
More than for an ordinary city break, because most pilgrims video-call family every day. CST measured an average of about 1.4 GB per person per day in Makkah and the holy sites during Hajj 2026. For Umrah with daily video calls, take the 10 GB plan or unlimited for the days you're there.
Will my phone work in the crowds at the Grand Mosque or the Prophet's Mosque?
Yes, the networks around both mosques are built for huge crowds, and CST reported full 4G and 5G coverage of the holy sites in 2026. At the busiest moments speeds can slow, so open your Nusuk permit beforehand and agree on a meeting point with your group.
Do I need fingerprints to get a SIM card in Saudi Arabia?
For a local SIM, yes. Saudi rules have required fingerprint verification for mobile lines since 2016, and visitors register with their passport, usually at an operator's branch. A travel eSIM installed before you fly skips that step.
Can I perform Umrah on a Saudi tourist eVisa?
Yes, outside Hajj season. The tourist eVisa covers Umrah but not Hajj, and you still need an Umrah permit booked in the Nusuk app. In the weeks around Hajj, Umrah permits pause and Makkah is limited to Hajj visa holders, so check the dates for your year.
