Start with the three biggest: turn off video autoplay in your social apps, drop streaming to Standard Definition, and disable Background App Refresh over cellular. Set photo backup and app updates to Wi-Fi only. With all ten in place, 3 GB comfortably covers two weeks of maps, messaging and light browsing.
Want a smaller, cheaper plan to stretch further? You don’t have to ration yourself, a handful of one-time settings changes can roughly halve your usage without you noticing. Here are ten, ordered from biggest impact to smallest.
| Biggest data hog | Quick fix | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| HD video autoplay | SD quality + autoplay off | Huge |
| Cloud photo backup | Set to Wi-Fi only | Huge |
| App & system updates | Restrict to Wi-Fi | Medium |
| Live maps | Download offline areas | Medium |
Do the first three before you fly and you’ve handled most of it. With all ten in place, a 3 GB plan can comfortably last a two-week trip of maps, messaging and light browsing.
Both phones have a built-in meter. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular, then scroll to per-app usage (reset it at the start of your trip). On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Data usage. Check it after a day or two and you’ll instantly spot the one or two apps doing the damage.
Saving data shouldn’t mean a stressful trip. Rough rule: ~1 GB/week for maps + messaging, ~3 GB/week if you add social and the odd video, unlimited if you tether or hotspot daily. Buy a little more than you think you’ll need and top up in seconds if you run low, it’s far cheaper than a stretch of roaming.
Two more reads to go further: how much data your apps really use shows where your gigabytes actually go, and the offline prep checklist covers what to download before you fly.
