Extending an unlimited eSIM plan with a top-up: what actually changes

You're a few days into an unlimited eSIM plan, decide the trip is running long, and buy a top-up to add more days. You check your phone right after, and... nothing looks different. Same daily allowance, same speed, same everything. It's a confusing moment, but nothing went wrong. An extension on an unlimited plan works differently from a top-up on a fixed-data plan, and once you know what it's actually doing, the lack of any visible change today makes complete sense.
What an extension actually adds
An unlimited eSIM works on a daily allowance: a set amount of full-speed data each day, with reduced speed for the rest of that day once it's used, then a fresh allowance tomorrow. A top-up on this kind of plan extends it by adding more DAYS of that same plan, not a second allowance for today and not extra high-speed data on top of what today already gives you. The size of your daily allowance and the time it resets stay exactly as they were before you topped up.
An extension adds days to the END of your plan, not extra data to today. If today's allowance is already used and throttled, buying an extension doesn't undo that, it just means the plan keeps going for longer once the current period is over.
Why nothing changes on the day you buy it
The added days begin only once your current plan period ends, not the moment you pay. That's the whole explanation for "I bought 3 more days, why did nothing change today?": the extension doesn't rewind or restart anything already in progress, it appends time onto the end. Your eSIM's "Plan ends" date moves out by however many days you added, and today's usage and speed carry on completely unaffected. If you're mid-throttle when you extend, you'll stay throttled until tomorrow's reset either way, the extension has nothing to do with that.
How to confirm it actually applied
Since there's no visible change on the day itself, check your account instead of your data speed:
- Sign in and open your eSIM from My account.
- Look at the "Plan ends" date. It should now read further out than it did before you bought the extension.
- Check the "Top-ups" list on the same page. Your new extension appears there with which order it came from and when.
If the new "Plan ends" date is showing, it worked, even though everything else on the eSIM looks and behaves exactly the same as it did five minutes earlier.
A few things worth knowing before you buy one
- Extensions are sold as a top-up on the eSIM you're already using: My account → your eSIM → Top up, the same place any top-up for that plan lives.
- You need the eSIM already activated and in use. A brand-new unlimited eSIM that hasn't connected to a network yet won't show an extension option until it has.
- Promo and discount codes don't apply to top-ups, extensions included.
- No reinstall, no new QR code. The extension attaches to the eSIM already on your phone.

That last row trips people up almost as often as the extension itself.
