Setting up an eSIM is genuinely quick, most people do it in under a minute, but the menus differ between iPhone and Android, and a couple of steps matter more than others. This guide gives you the exact path on each platform, in order, plus the golden rule that prevents almost every problem: install at home on Wi-Fi, activate when you land. Follow the section for your phone and you’ll be online before you leave the airport.
The golden rule: install early, activate later
In short: Install at home on Wi-Fi. The plan only starts when you switch it on abroad.
Install your eSIM before you travel, while you have Wi-Fi. Downloading the profile needs an internet connection, and you don’t want to be hunting for airport Wi-Fi with the QR code on the same screen you’re trying to scan. Installing does not start your plan, a travel eSIM begins counting data (and its validity window) only when you switch it on at your destination. So there’s no downside to installing days in advance. First, it’s worth confirming your phone is eSIM-capable and unlocked.

Set up an eSIM on iPhone
In short: Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, scan the QR code. About two minutes.
With your QR code open on another screen or printed out, follow these steps: (Newer phones can often skip the code entirely: one-tap eSIM install covers which devices support it and when it is the better route.)

Set up an eSIM on Android
In short: Settings, Network & internet, SIMs, Add eSIM. Samsung keeps it under Connections.
Menu names vary by manufacturer, but the flow is the same. On most Pixels and stock Android:
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. (Google’s official steps)
- Tap Add eSIM (or “Download a SIM instead?”).
- Choose Scan QR code and point the camera at the code from your email.
- Confirm the download and give the eSIM a recognizable name.
- On Samsung the path is Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code.
TipManufacturer menus drift between Android versions. If you can’t find “Add eSIM,” search your Settings app for “eSIM” or “SIM”, the option will surface even if it’s buried under a different name.
When you land: two toggles to connect
In short: Make the eSIM your data line and turn on its Data Roaming. That's it.
This is the part that actually gets you online, and it’s just two settings on the travel eSIM:
- Set the travel eSIM as your Mobile Data line (iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → pick the eSIM. Android: SIMs → eSIM → Mobile data).
- Turn ON Data Roaming for that eSIM. It rides partner networks, which the phone treats as roaming, but there’s no roaming bill on a travel eSIM.
Within a minute you should have signal and working data. If not, toggle Airplane mode for ten seconds or restart the phone, and if it still won’t connect, work through the troubleshooting guide.
One more setting that saves money
In short: Turn off automatic data switching and keep your home SIM's roaming off.
Turn off “Allow data switching” (iPhone: Cellular → Cellular Data) or automatic data SIM switching (Android), and make sure your home SIM’s Data Roaming stays OFF. This stops your phone from silently falling back to your home carrier’s expensive roaming if the eSIM signal dips. Keep your home SIM as the calls-and-texts line so you still get bank codes on your normal number.
