APN settings on a travel eSIM: when and how to set them — How-to travel guide

You almost never set it. Your travel eSIM applies the correct APN by itself the moment it registers on a partner network at your destination. If data still won't load, check that you've arrived, that the eSIM is your active data line, and that Data Roaming is on before editing anything.

Somewhere deep in your phone's settings there's a field called APN. It looks technical and a little intimidating, and here's the reassuring part: on a Zwitchy travel eSIM you almost never have to touch it. This guide explains what an APN is, why it usually configures itself, and, for the rare case where you do need it, exactly where to find it on iPhone and Android.

What an APN actually is

APN stands for Access Point Name. Think of it as the address your phone dials to reach a mobile network's data service, the doorway between your device and the internet. When the address is right, mobile data flows. When it's wrong or missing, you can show full signal bars and still load nothing. Every network has its own APN, which is the only reason the setting exists at all.

💡

The short version: a Zwitchy travel eSIM normally sets its own APN automatically the moment it connects. Most travelers never open this screen, and you shouldn't go looking for it unless your data genuinely isn't working.

Why you probably won't need to touch it

Modern eSIMs carry their network settings with them. As soon as your travel eSIM registers on a partner network at your destination, the correct APN is applied in the background. That's the whole design: you install the eSIM before you leave, it activates when you arrive, and data simply starts. Remember that installing an eSIM isn't the same as activating it, data and validity begin on arrival, not the moment you scan the QR code. So if you've only just installed it at home, seeing no data yet is completely normal, not an APN problem.

First, rule out the usual suspects

An APN edit is a last resort, not a first step. Nine times out of ten, data that won't connect is fixed by something much simpler. Before you even think about the APN, confirm all of the following:

If data is still dead after all of that, work through our step-by-step troubleshooting guide, it resolves the vast majority of cases. Only if you reach the end of that list, with the eSIM confirmed as your data line and Data Roaming on, is it worth looking at the APN itself.

Animation of setting the APN on a travel eSIM: type the APN value into the field, tap Save, and the signal bars come up as the phone connects.
On the rare occasion you need it: enter the APN, save, and the connection comes up.

Where to view or edit the APN on iPhone

On an iPhone, the APN for each line lives in its cellular settings. Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data), tap the plan name for your Zwitchy eSIM, then open Cellular Data Network. The APN field sits under the "Cellular Data" heading. Apple explains the screen in its own guide: View and edit your APN on iPhone. Leave every field blank unless Zwitchy has given you a specific value to enter.

Where to view or edit the APN on Android

Android wording varies slightly by brand, but the path is consistent. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, choose your Zwitchy eSIM, then tap Access Point Names. You'll see the APN list for that line; tap an entry to view it, or use the menu to add a new one. Google's Pixel guide walks through it here: Connect to mobile networks on a Pixel phone. Never change the APN on your HOME SIM. That line carries your calls, texts, and one-time passcodes while you travel, and editing its APN can knock out its data or connection. Only ever touch the APN on the Zwitchy travel eSIM, and only when data has genuinely failed every other check.

If you still need the exact APN

If you've confirmed the eSIM is your data line, Data Roaming is on, you've restarted, and data still won't load, that's the moment to contact us. Zwitchy can supply the exact APN value for your eSIM so you can type it in with confidence, no guessing, no random values copied from a forum. While you're in there, double-check that Data Roaming really is on, since it's the single most common cause of a travel eSIM that won't connect; our guide on why Data Roaming is correct and safe explains why. You can review your plan and reinstall details any time from your install page.

Do I need to set an APN for my Zwitchy eSIM?

Almost certainly not. A Zwitchy travel eSIM configures its APN automatically when it connects to a partner network. The setting only matters in rare cases where data won't work even after every other check.

My data isn't working, is the APN the problem?

Usually not. Most often it's because you haven't arrived yet, the eSIM isn't selected as your data line, or Data Roaming is off. Confirm those first; the APN is the last thing to check, not the first.

Where do I find the APN on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → your Zwitchy eSIM → Cellular Data Network. On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your Zwitchy eSIM → Access Point Names.

Can I just change my home SIM's APN to fix things?

No. Leave your home SIM's APN alone, it carries your calls, texts, and verification codes. Only ever adjust the APN on the Zwitchy travel eSIM, and only if data has failed every other check.

Where do I get the correct APN value?

From Zwitchy. If you truly need it, contact us and we'll give you the exact value for your eSIM. Never copy an APN from a forum or another carrier, a wrong value can stop data entirely.

Will turning on Data Roaming for the eSIM cost me extra?

No. On a Zwitchy travel eSIM, Data Roaming ON simply lets the eSIM use local partner networks. It's included in your plan and never triggers a roaming bill.
