If you’re new to travel eSIMs, you probably have a dozen small questions and no single place that answers them. This is that place. We’ve gathered the questions travelers ask most, about compatibility, installation, data, keeping your number, and money, and answered each one plainly. Skim for the one that’s nagging you, or read it through before your first trip.

The basics

What is a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM is a digital SIM you download to your phone to get mobile data abroad. There’s no plastic card, you scan a QR code and a data profile installs in seconds, connecting you to local partner networks.

How is an eSIM different from a normal SIM?

A normal SIM is a removable plastic card holding one carrier’s identity. An eSIM is a chip built into your phone that can store several carrier profiles and switch between them in software, no swapping cards.

Do I need to remove my physical SIM?

No. The eSIM runs alongside your physical SIM. You keep your home SIM in for calls and texts and use the eSIM for data.

Is an eSIM safe to use?

Yes, arguably safer than a plastic SIM. It can’t be physically removed from a stolen phone, so a thief can’t pull it to hijack your number or intercept SMS codes.

Compatibility

Does my phone support eSIM?

Most phones from the last six years do: iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, among many others. On iPhone, check Settings → General → About for an EID; on Android, look for an “Add eSIM” option. See the full compatibility checklist.

Does my phone need to be unlocked?

Yes. A carrier-locked phone won’t accept a third-party eSIM. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock on iPhone, or ask your carrier. Unlocking is usually free once the device is paid off.

Why won’t my phone install the eSIM?

Almost always a carrier lock or a weak connection during install. Confirm the phone is unlocked and install over stable Wi-Fi. Still stuck? Work through the troubleshooting steps.

Can I use a travel eSIM on my iPad or tablet?

Yes, on cellular models, it works as a data-only line and can hotspot your other devices. Smartwatch eSIMs usually can’t load third-party travel plans.

Setup and activation

When should I install my eSIM?

Before you fly, on Wi-Fi. Installing needs internet but doesn’t start your plan, data and validity begin only when you switch it on at your destination.

How do I activate it when I arrive?

Set the eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. You’ll connect to a local network within about a minute.

Does turning on Data Roaming cost extra?

Not on a travel eSIM. Roaming charges come from your home carrier. The eSIM uses partner networks directly, so the toggle just grants permission to connect.

How long does setup take?

Installing is a few seconds; activating on arrival is two toggles. Most people are online in under a minute after landing.

Can I install the same eSIM on two phones?

No. An eSIM profile binds to one device. If you change phones, you install a fresh profile on the new one.

Data, coverage and speed

How much data do I need?

A rough guide: ~1 GB/week for maps and messaging, ~3 GB/week if you add social and the odd video, and unlimited if you stream or tether daily. Buy a little extra and top up if needed.

What happens when I run out of data?

You’ll get alerts at 80% and 100%. Topping up takes two taps and applies instantly to the same eSIM, no reinstall.

Can I use one plan in multiple countries?

Yes, regional and global plans cover groups of countries on a single eSIM, so you don’t reinstall at every border. Single-country plans are cheaper if you’re staying put.

Will I get 4G or 5G?

The eSIM connects to tier-1 local partners with 4G/5G LTE where it’s available. Exact networks and speeds are listed on each destination page before you buy.

Can I use a hotspot / tether?

Yes, on most plans. Sharing your connection counts against your data allowance, so size your plan accordingly if you’ll tether a laptop.

Why is my data slow?

Usually network selection. Toggle Airplane mode for ten seconds, or manually pick a partner network. Some countries throttle video on fair-use plans.

Can I make calls and send texts on the eSIM?

Travel eSIMs are data-only. Use your home SIM for traditional calls/texts, or call over data with WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal for free.

Your number and apps

Will I keep my phone number?

Yes. The eSIM is data-only, so your number stays on your home SIM and remains active for calls and texts.

Will I still get bank verification (2FA) codes?

Yes. Those SMS go to your number on your home SIM, which stays active. Receiving texts doesn’t require home data.

Do iMessage and WhatsApp keep working?

Yes. Both are tied to your unchanged number and run over the eSIM’s data. No re-verification needed, don’t change your number in the apps.

Billing, top-ups and refunds

How does billing work?

You pay once upfront for the data you choose, no contracts, no auto-renew. Running low? Top up in two taps; it attaches to the same eSIM instantly.

Are there hidden or activation fees?

No. The price you see is the price you pay, no activation fees and no auto-renew traps.

Can I get a refund?

If an eSIM won’t activate and our team can’t fix it, unused plans are refundable within 30 days. Plans that have already used data aren’t refundable.

Does my plan expire?

Each plan has a validity window that starts when you activate it, not when you buy it. The window is shown on the plan before purchase.

Can I top up without reinstalling?

Yes. A top-up attaches to your existing eSIM instantly, there’s no new QR code and no reinstall.
