Switch to fast, stable Wi-Fi and restart the phone. That clears most stuck installs. A stalled download comes down to three things: you're installing over mobile data or weak Wi-Fi, an old half-finished profile is still on the phone, or the QR code has already been used, and even a failed attempt spends it.
An eSIM stuck on “Installing…”, or a spinner that never finishes, is one of the more stressful things to see the night before a trip, but it's almost never a broken eSIM. The profile download is a small file transfer that stalls for a handful of predictable reasons: a shaky connection, an old profile still sitting on the phone, or a code that's already been used. Work through the steps below in order, most stuck installs clear in the first two or three.
Before anything else, check these three, together they explain most stuck installs:
Each Zwitchy QR code is single-use. If a first attempt fails partway through, don't scan the same code again and hope it goes through this time, it won't, and repeated scans make it harder to tell what's actually gone wrong. Move to the steps below instead.

Installing an eSIM means your phone downloads and validates a carrier profile in the background, and that download needs a real connection to finish. Mobile data, a weak hotel Wi-Fi signal, or a captive portal you haven't accepted yet are the most common reasons an install stalls partway through. Switch to Wi-Fi you know is solid, ideally the one at home, before you try again. Install the eSIM before you fly and this step is a non-issue, installing doesn't start your plan or use data, so there's no reason to wait until you land.
If the spinner is still going after a minute or two, don't force a second scan on top of it, most phones won't run two installs of the same code at once, and a second attempt is more likely to throw an error than to help. Restart the phone instead. A full power-off and back on clears almost every stuck network or download state, and Apple's own eSIM setup troubleshooting recommends exactly this: restart, then try again. Toggling Airplane Mode on and off for ten seconds first is worth doing too, it forces the phone to drop and re-establish its network before you retry.
On iPhone, a partial install sometimes leaves a dead entry that blocks a fresh attempt. Apple doesn't offer a way to cancel an install in progress, so if one is genuinely stuck: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings, or remove the affected line directly from Settings → Cellular if one shows up there, then reinstall your Zwitchy code.
On Android, an old profile from a previous trip is the more common blocker. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and erase any inactive or expired eSIM you don't recognise before adding the new one. Google's Pixel eSIM setup guide notes that persistent issues are usually solved by simply trying again after this kind of cleanup; on Samsung, Samsung's own SIM troubleshooting points to the same fix if a fresh eSIM still won't take: Settings → General management → Reset → Reset network settings.
A locked phone is the one cause no amount of restarting will fix. If a carrier or reseller sold you the phone, it may be locked to that network, and a locked phone can start an eSIM install but never actually validate it, so the spinner runs forever or the install fails right at the end. Ask your carrier to confirm it's unlocked. It's also worth double-checking the phone supports eSIM at all, not every model does. Our compatibility checklist lists every supported iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy model, along with how to check for an EID.
| What you see | Most likely fix |
|---|---|
| Stuck on “Installing…” with no progress | Move to stable Wi-Fi and restart the phone (Steps 1-2) |
| “Unable to Add Cellular Plan” / “Could not add eSIM” | Restart, then clear a stuck profile (Step 3) |
| “Cellular Plans From This Carrier Cannot Be Added” | Phone is locked, contact your carrier (Step 4) |
| Scan succeeds but the install never starts | Reinstall over Wi-Fi; if the scan itself is the problem, see our QR guide below |
| “Code already used” / “Not a valid QR code” | The code is spent, contact us for a fresh one |
If you've worked through every step above and the install still won't finish, the most reliable fallback is entering the details by hand instead of scanning, our manual activation guide walks through it and sidesteps most install-specific bugs entirely. If the QR code itself won't even register a scan, that's a different, simpler fix, our guide to a QR code that won't scan covers it. If your eSIM installs cleanly but then shows no signal once you're online, that's a separate issue too, our connection troubleshooting guide covers it, and our guide to every eSIM error message is worth a look if you're staring at a specific error code. And if none of it works, support is on live chat 24/7 with your order number, and if we genuinely can't get an eSIM to activate, unused plans are refundable within 30 days. One thing worth ruling out first: if it's your order rather than your phone showing something unfamiliar, still reading Provisioning right after you paid, that's a normal early stage, not a stuck install, see why isn't my eSIM ready right after I pay?
Almost always a connection or a leftover profile. Move to stable Wi-Fi, restart your phone, and clear any old eSIM still on the device before trying again.
Only if it never actually started. Once a scan is accepted, the code is spent even if the install then fails, so a second scan usually throws an error rather than finishing the job. Contact us for a fresh code if you're not sure.
No. A restart clears the stuck network state that's usually causing the problem, it doesn't remove or reset a profile that's already partway installed.
No, and you shouldn't wait until you land. Install over Wi-Fi at home before you fly, installing doesn't start your data or validity, that only begins once you switch the eSIM on and connect abroad.
