Why isn’t my eSIM ready right after I pay?

Why isn’t my eSIM ready right after I pay? — How-to travel guide

Paid means the money arrived, not that your eSIM is ready. Provisioning finishes in seconds for almost everyone; Installed only becomes Active once you actually connect abroad and data flows. If setup is genuinely stuck past about 20 minutes, we already emailed you and are retrying automatically, so there’s nothing to do yet.

The moment right after checkout is the single most common time to panic about a travel eSIM, and it’s almost always over nothing. Your card gets charged, the confirmation screen loads, and then the app or the order page shows a status word you’ve never seen before instead of a QR code sitting there ready to go. That gap between “paid” and “ready” is normal, it’s just rarely explained anywhere, so here’s exactly what each status means, roughly how long each step takes, and the one situation actually worth acting on.

A labeled timeline of the four eSIM statuses after paying: Provisioning, Ready to install, Installed and Active, with the gap between Installed and Active called out
Four statuses, one gap that trips people up: Installed just means the profile is on your phone, not that you're online yet.

What do Provisioning, Installed and Active actually mean?

Every order moves through the same sequence of labels, in My account and on the eSIM’s own detail page. Knowing what each one means tells you instantly whether to wait, act, or relax.

Two of those, Provisioning and Ready to install, resolve themselves or wait patiently for you. The jump from Installed to Active is the one that trips people up, because it looks like the finish line when it’s actually the step before it.

Why doesn’t Installed mean I’m already online?

Installing a profile and using it are two different actions on the phone’s side. Installing puts the eSIM on the device and lets it show up as a line in Settings, nothing more. Active only appears once you’ve switched that line on as your data connection, arrived somewhere it has coverage, and actually pulled data over it, even a single page load. A plan sitting at Installed while you’re still at home, or before you’ve landed at your destination, is exactly what it should look like. It only becomes worth investigating once you’re at your destination, the eSIM is on and selected as your data line, and it still hasn’t moved past Installed after a few minutes of trying to load something.

What’s actually happening behind the scenes while it sets up?

None of this is unique to Zwitchy. Every eSIM, from every provider, works by downloading a small profile onto your phone and then having a network switch it on, which is why there’s a brief setup window at all rather than an instant swap like a physical SIM. Apple’s own guide to setting up an eSIM on iPhone walks through the same scan-the-QR-code-and-wait flow, down to the “Cellular Plan Detected” notification you tap to confirm it. Google’s eSIM setup guide for Pixel phones describes the equivalent Download SIM step on Android. On our side, once your payment clears, we generate the profile, hand it to your phone to install, and then wait for the carrier network to confirm the line, three short steps that map onto Provisioning, Ready to install and Installed. None of it needs you to refresh the page or reopen the app to move along.

What if setup is taking longer than a few minutes?

A handful of orders take longer because of a slow connection or a busy moment on the network side, not because anything failed.

Stuck on the phone’s own “Installing…” spinner rather than an order that says Provisioning? That’s a different, phone-side problem with its own fix: see why is my eSIM stuck installing?

I’m Installed, so why isn’t anything loading at my destination?

This is the point where “ready” and “working” genuinely diverge, and it’s worth ruling out a couple of specific things rather than assuming the eSIM itself is faulty. Confirm Data Roaming is on for the Zwitchy line and that it’s actually set as your data line, both settings that a phone can quietly reset. If the status bar reads “No Service” or “Forbidden abroad”, our dedicated guide covers exactly that message. For a broader rundown that sorts every “not working” complaint into the right fix, from a stalled install to a plan that connects and then drops, start with our full diagnostic guide. If My account doesn’t show the order at all, that’s almost always a different issue, usually a checkout that never fully completed, and this guide covers where to look before assuming you’ve lost anything.

What happens once I’m Active?

From here it behaves like any working data connection: it’ll keep pulling data as you use your phone, and it’s worth a quick glance now and then so a long trip doesn’t run out unexpectedly. How to check your eSIM data usage covers where to see your remaining balance and how to get an alert before you hit zero.

Why does my order still say Provisioning after I paid?

Provisioning is a backend step that normally finishes in seconds. If it’s been more than a couple of minutes, refresh My account before assuming anything is wrong, most cases clear on their own.

What’s the actual difference between Installed and Active?

Installed means the profile is on your phone. Active means data has actually flowed over it at least once. You can be Installed for days before your trip and that’s completely normal.

How long should eSIM setup take after checkout?

Almost instantly for most orders, seconds to install the profile, then it becomes Active the first time you connect abroad. If setup itself is still stuck past about 20 minutes, we email you and keep retrying automatically.

My eSIM says Installed, but I have no data yet. Should I worry?

Not before you arrive. Installed without Active is expected right up until you land somewhere with coverage and go online. It’s only worth troubleshooting once you’re at your destination and it still won’t move past Installed.

What happens if my order never finishes provisioning?

It fails safely rather than silently. If a setup genuinely can’t complete, the order is refunded automatically, you don’t need to contact anyone to get your money back.

Can I install my eSIM before my trip, or do I need to wait until I land?

Install it whenever you like, ideally over Wi-Fi before you fly. Installing doesn’t start your plan’s validity or use any data, only actually connecting abroad does that.
