Which plan type is right for you?
Fixed data plans give you a set amount of data, for example 1 GB or 5 GB, to use at full speed for the whole plan period. When it runs out, you top up or buy again. Pick this if you know roughly how much you'll use.
Unlimited plans have no total data cap for the plan period, but each day includes a high-speed allowance. Once you use that day's allowance, you carry on at a reduced speed. Reduced-speed data has a daily limit too, and if you reach it, data pauses until the allowance resets 24 hours after you activate the eSIM. Pick this for heavier or less predictable use. Roaming rules differ
Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania are EU members and follow the EU's roaming rules. The other Balkan countries make their own roaming arrangements, so a home SIM can be priced differently on each side of a border. This eSIM covers every country on its list at one price.
Getting around
The Neum stretch
The coast road between Split and Dubrovnik crosses around 9 km of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. There your phone can switch to a Bosnian network, and a home SIM's own rules for that country apply. The Pelješac Bridge route stays inside Croatia.

Balkan mountain trails are not always marked, and Canada's advice for Montenegro and North Macedonia warns the weather can turn quickly, even in summer. Set off with a fully charged phone and offline maps, and tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
Safety
Stay on marked paths
Landmines from the wars of the 1990s still lie in rural Bosnia and Herzegovina and in parts of Croatia, including remote corners of Plitvice Lakes National Park. UK travel advice is to keep to roads, paved areas and marked paths, so don't follow a map app's shortcut across open ground.
