Europe eSIM

Good to know in Europe

• Roaming

  Where EU roaming stops

The EU's roam-like-at-home rules reach a few neighbours too, such as Norway, Iceland, Moldova and Ukraine, but not the whole continent. Switzerland and the UK, for example, sit outside them, so what a home SIM charges there is up to its operator. This eSIM works in every country on its list at one price.

• Coverage

  Borders come early

Near a frontier, your phone can latch onto the neighbouring country's network before you've crossed. Ireland's regulator gives the example of a phone in Italy connecting to a Swiss network, which matters in the Alps and anywhere else the EU meets a non-EU country.

• Getting around

  Ferries and flights

EU roaming rules only apply on board while your phone is on a land-based network. Once a ship is out at sea or a plane is in the air, the phone can join an on-board satellite network, which falls outside those rules and bills separately. Flight mode on board is the simple way to stay off it.

112 is free from any phone across the EU and is also used in some non-EU countries, such as Switzerland, according to the European Commission. In the UK, 999 and 112 both work.
