The Shared Rural Network, the joint government and industry programme behind most new rural masts, reports over 95% of the UK now within range of a 4G signal from at least one operator, but the government's September 2024 update put coverage from all four operators at 78% of UK landmass, up from 66% in 2020. In a Highland glen, that gap is the difference between bars and nothing.
The gaps that remain have a name in the programme's own paperwork: total not-spots, areas with no mobile signal from any operator, and the masts still going up target Glen Coe, the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, Wester Ross and several islands. The London Underground is the opposite case: connectivity arrived station by station, so expect a signal in many central stations and none in the tunnels between some of them.
