How much data you need in the USA

The USA is a country of two networks. In cities and along the interstates you get some of the fastest 5G on the planet; in the national parks, the desert and the mountain passes you get nothing at all. The trick to staying connected is budgeting for heavy day-to-day use โ€” rideshare, maps, hotspotting โ€” while preparing for genuine dead zones on the scenic stretches.

What drives your data in the States

American travel leans hard on the phone: Uber and Lyft running maps for every trip, Google Maps for sprawling cities and long drives, and streaming to fill the miles. If you're road-tripping, you'll also hotspot more than usual โ€” a passenger's laptop, a second phone, a tablet for the kids.

A realistic budget

City breaks use less; road trips and remote-work stays use more:

TripSuggested data
1 week, one city5โ€“8 GB
2 weeks, road trip10โ€“15 GB
1 month stay15โ€“20 GB
+ remote work / hotspotUnlimited

Where the signal drops

Expect little to no coverage in the big national parks โ€” Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon's rims and trails, Death Valley โ€” and on long desert and mountain highways. Before each leg, download offline maps while you've got strong city signal, and save your reservations offline. Coverage rides tier-1 networks (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon), so in town you'll rarely want for speed.

Setup, and a US iPhone quirk

Install before you fly, then on landing set Zwitchy as your data line and turn on Data Roaming for it โ€” the full setup walkthrough covers both platforms. One note specific to the US: iPhone 14, 15 and 16 models sold in the States are eSIM-only with no physical tray, so confirm your phone's eSIM status if you bought it there.

Keep your home number live

US car rentals, hotels and your bank back home lean on SMS codes. Keep your home SIM in with its data roaming off so those texts land on your usual number while Zwitchy handles the data.

Hotspotting the family on a road trip? The tethering guide explains how much that adds, and what it costs to size up. Unsure? Start around 10 GB for two weeks and top up if you run low.
