Looking for an eSIM for Fiji? Zwitchy's Fiji eSIM connects on Vodafone Fiji's 4G LTE network, with no 5G, and installs at home with no passport check at an airport counter. Budget 4 to 8 GB for one to two weeks, consider unlimited for a month of study, and expect patchy signal on boat days.
Most Fiji trips start the same way: a landing at Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu, a night or two around Nadi or Denarau, then a boat out to the Mamanuca or Yasawa islands. Mobile coverage follows the same shape: strong around the main island's towns and resorts, thinner the further the boat goes. Here's what to buy, where the signal holds up, and how much data a holiday or a month of English study takes.
Why a travel eSIM works well for Fiji
In short: A travel eSIM installs at home and works the moment you land, with no airport queue.
You have three ways to get online: roam on your home plan, buy a local SIM at Nadi airport, or install a travel eSIM before you fly. Roaming is usually the priciest of the three. A local SIM is cheap per gigabyte, but you collect it in person with your passport. A travel eSIM installs at home, connects as you land and keeps your home SIM in for calls and bank texts. Weighing it up? See eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming.
Zwitchy's Fiji plans connect on Vodafone Fiji and are data-only: there's no Fijian number, so calls go over WhatsApp, FaceTime or your home line. More in what a data-only eSIM means for calls and texts.
Local SIMs: Vodafone Fiji vs Digicel
In short: Vodafone and Digicel sell tourist SIMs at Nadi airport from 5am to 10pm, passport in person.
If you'd rather go local, Vodafone and Digicel both sell tourist SIMs at counters in the Nadi airport arrivals hall, which Tourism Fiji says open from 5am to 10pm daily. Bring your physical passport: Vodafone's tourist SIM terms accept only a valid physical passport for registration. Here's how the options compare, with local prices in Fiji dollars (FJ$) as listed in October 2026:
| Option | What you get | Where and how |
|---|---|---|
| Vodafone Fiji tourist SIM | Tourist packages at the counter, data top-ups via *555# | Vodafone outlet in Nadi airport arrivals, passport in person |
| Vodafone Fiji Tourist eSIM | Data plans in Vodafone's app or website | Online before you fly, with a passport upload and a selfie |
| Digicel tourist SIM | 75 GB for 7 days (FJ$25), 180 GB for 15 days (FJ$50) or 230 GB for 30 days (FJ$70) | Digicel shop at Nadi airport or any Digicel store |
| Zwitchy Fiji eSIM | 1 to 50 GB for 30 days, unlimited for 3 to 30 days, or 100 MB for a day, on Vodafone 4G LTE | Online, installs at home, no passport check |
Heads-upVodafone's own Tourist eSIM can also be bought before you fly, but it isn't instant: you create an account, enter your arrival date and accommodation, upload your passport and take a selfie, which Vodafone calls a legal requirement, and the eSIM then activates the night before you land. Digicel's Traveler bundles only attach to a Digicel tourist SIM, not to a regular prepaid one.
Per gigabyte, a local tourist bundle is hard to beat if you don't mind the queue. A travel eSIM wins on convenience: it's ready before the plane doors open, whatever time you land.
Landing at Nadi International Airport
In short: Switch on the eSIM and Data Roaming after landing; free airport Wi-Fi covers the first 2 hours.
Almost every international flight lands at Nadi International Airport (NAN) on Viti Levu's west coast, including Fiji Airways' nonstop from Tokyo Narita. Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you go, then:
- Once you're off the plane, switch on the Zwitchy line, set it as your mobile data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Your phone joins Vodafone Fiji on its own.
- Keep data roaming off on your home SIM, so it can't run up charges.
- No signal yet? The airport's free Wi-Fi works throughout the terminals for up to 2 hours or 1 GB, whichever comes first.
- Get some Fiji dollars from the ATMs or exchange counters in the arrivals hall. Most resorts and tours take cards, usually with a 3% surcharge, but buses, taxis, markets and many small shops want cash.
There's no Uber or Lyft in Fiji, so yellow metered taxis, a pre-booked transfer or your hotel shuttle are the usual ways out. Local buses need a prepaid e-ticket card, sold at the Vodafone outlet in arrivals, as Tourism Fiji's airport guide explains.
Coverage on Viti Levu and the outer islands
In short: Viti Levu's towns are well covered; outer islands vary, and open water between them drops out.
On Viti Levu, the main island, you'll be online in Nadi, Denarau, Lautoka, Sigatoka and Suva, the towns where Vodafone has even started switching on 5G, according to its coverage map. Vodafone's own Tourist eSIM FAQ sums up the rest of the country plainly: coverage in major towns and tourist areas, and limited signal in some remote locations.
Vodafone's own summary: coverage in major towns and tourist areas, limited signal in some remote spots.
TipNo 5G on this plan, and that's fine. Vodafone Fiji has 5G live in parts of Fiji, but Zwitchy's Fiji eSIM connects on 4G LTE only, so you won't see 5G even in Nadi or Denarau. Vodafone's 5G currently needs a phone bought from a Vodafone Fiji store anyway, so most visitors are on 4G whatever SIM they use, and it's plenty for maps, video calls and uploads.
Out on the islands it depends where you are. Vodafone said in 2020 that the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups had good coverage for voice and data, and that it had extended 4G+ to resort islands including Mana, Malolo, Tokoriki and Vomo, as well as Taveuni and Levuka (Fiji Sun). Plan for gaps anyway: remote beaches and the open water between islands are where any signal is most likely to drop. Download offline maps of Viti Levu and your island before you leave Nadi.
Ferries, boat days and resort Wi-Fi
In short: Save bookings offline before the boat leaves Port Denarau, and check resort Wi-Fi before you book.
Most island trips start at Port Denarau. The Yasawa Flyer, a fast catamaran, runs from Port Denarau through the Mamanucas and up the Yasawa chain and back every day, stopping at resorts along the way, and South Sea Cruises runs daily day trips and resort transfers to the Mamanucas. Save your booking confirmation and resort details offline before you board, since signal can come and go on the crossing.
Check resort Wi-Fi before you book: does it reach the rooms or only the main building, and does it cost extra? Tourism Fiji itself suggests a data package if you don't want to rely on resort Wi-Fi.
How much data you'll need in Fiji
In short: Most trips use 4 to 8 GB over one to two weeks; photos, video and calls home are what add up.
Fiji trips are lighter on data than city breaks, because most days go on the beach, the reef and the boat. Photos, video and calls home are what add up. Most travelers land between 4 and 8 GB for one to two weeks:
- Light (about 2-4 GB): an island resort week with maps, messaging and evening Wi-Fi.
- Typical (about 4-6 GB): Nadi or the Coral Coast plus island days, with daily posts and photo uploads.
- Heavy (8 GB+ or unlimited): video calls, streaming, hotspotting a laptop or a study stay.
| Activity | Rough data use |
|---|---|
| Maps & navigation | ~50 MB / day |
| Messaging + photos | ~150 MB / day |
| Social scrolling | ~600 MB / hour |
| HD video streaming | ~1.5 GB / hour |
Which Fiji plan to buy
In short: Take 5 GB for a week, 10 GB for two, and unlimited or 30 GB+ for a month of study.
Every Fiji plan with a set amount of data lasts 30 days, in 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 or 50 GB. Unlimited plans run for 3 to 30 days with 1 GB a day at full speed, then slower, and a 100 MB plan covers a single day. All of them are data-only. Match the budget above to your trip:
- A Nadi stopover, or a test before a long stay: the 100 MB plan for one day, or 1 GB for a few days of maps and messages.
- A week at an island resort with Wi-Fi: the 3 GB plan.
- A typical week of Nadi plus island days: the 5 GB plan.
- Two weeks, or lots of video: the 10 GB plan.
- A month of study, remote work or streaming: 20 GB or bigger, or a 30-day unlimited plan.
Want one pick? Take 5 GB for a week and 10 GB for two. If you run low, a top-up attaches to the same eSIM in seconds.
Studying English in Fiji, or staying a month or more
In short: A 30-day plan or unlimited covers a month of English study; add a local SIM for longer stays.
Fiji isn't only for honeymoons. English is one of its official languages, alongside Fijian and Fiji Hindi, and the country has long been an affordable place for Japanese students to learn it: a Japanese-founded English school was approved by the Fiji government in 2003, according to the Japan Foundation, and its programs with schools in Nadi and Lautoka are still taking students in 2026 (PR Times).
For a month-long course, the 30-day plans fit neatly. A 30 GB or 50 GB plan, or 30 days of unlimited, covers lessons, calls home and evening streaming, and you can top up when it runs low. Staying several months? A local SIM with a Fijian number becomes worth the store visit with your passport, since it's handy for school, homestay and friends. Our long-stay guide explains running both side by side.
Using your iPhone or Android in Fiji
In short: Any unlocked eSIM phone works; on this plan it shows 4G or LTE, never 5G.
Any eSIM-capable phone works: iPhone XS/XR or newer, Google Pixel 3 and up, and recent Samsung Galaxy flagships. It has to be carrier-unlocked, and on an iPhone you can check for an EID under Settings → General → About. Keep your home SIM in for calls and texts and choose Zwitchy as the data line. Your phone will show 4G or LTE on Vodafone Fiji, never 5G, which is normal for this plan.
Heading on to New Zealand or Australia? Each runs on its own networks, so add a plan for that leg. Ready to pick a size?
Questions travelers ask
Which network does Zwitchy's Fiji eSIM use?
Vodafone Fiji, on 4G LTE. The plan doesn't include 5G, even where Vodafone has switched it on. There's nothing to pick by hand: turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM and your phone joins Vodafone when you land at Nadi.
Can I buy a SIM card at Nadi airport?
Yes. Vodafone and Digicel both have counters in the arrivals hall, open 5am to 10pm daily according to Tourism Fiji, and you register with your physical passport. Digicel's cheapest Traveler bundle, for example, gives 75 GB for 7 days for FJ$25. Land outside those hours and both counters are closed.
Do I need a passport to get a SIM card in Fiji?
For a local one, yes. Vodafone's tourist SIM accepts only a valid physical passport, and its Tourist eSIM asks for a passport upload and a selfie. A Zwitchy eSIM is bought online with just an email address and installs at home.
Will I have signal in the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands?
Usually around the main resort islands, where Vodafone has extended 4G+ to Mana, Malolo, Tokoriki and Vomo, among others. Remote spots and the open water between islands can drop out, so download offline maps first.
How much data do I need for a week in Fiji?
Around 3 to 5 GB covers a typical week of maps, messaging and photo uploads, less if you're mostly at an island resort with Wi-Fi. Add more for video calls, streaming or a laptop on hotspot.
Which plan should I get for a month of English study in Fiji?
A 30-day plan. Take 30 GB or 50 GB if you stream and video call home often, or a 30-day unlimited plan if you'd rather not count: 1 GB a day at full speed, then slower. Staying several months? Add a local SIM for a Fijian number.
Is there 5G in Fiji?
Vodafone Fiji has 5G in parts of Suva, Nadi, Denarau, Sigatoka and Lautoka, but it currently needs a phone bought from a Vodafone Fiji store and a 5G bundle. Zwitchy's Fiji eSIM runs on 4G LTE only, which handles maps, video calls and uploads.
Can I make calls with a Fiji eSIM?
Zwitchy's Fiji plans are data-only, so there's no Fijian number. WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work over the data, and your home SIM can stay on for normal calls at your carrier's roaming rates.
